Malaysia’s University Ranking in the QS Asian University Ranking 2011

What: QS University ranking for Asia’s Universities
When: Year 2011
Among the top 200 universities in Asia, Malaysia has
(List is shown by: Rank-Name-Score)
*A score of 100 is given to the top universiti in the list, and the rest are pegged to this score
  • No. 39 Universiti Malaya (UM) – 73.70
  • No. 53 Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) – 64.09
  • No. 54 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) – 63.40
  • No. 57 Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) – 60.40
  • No. 76 Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) – 55.10
  • No. 161-170 International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) – 32.90
  • No. 191-200 Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) – 28.70
Selected Malaysia Universities outside of the Top 200 which is unranked:
  • Multimedia University (MMU) – 27.00
  • Limkokwing University of Creative Technology – 23.40
  • Universiti Teknologi Petronas (Petronas) – 21.00
  • Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) – 19.10

  • Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) – 11.30
  • Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR) – 6.90
(Glaringly missing from the list is UMS, if any readers can find it, please inform us)
This meant that among all the universities in Malaysia (foreign campuses in Malaysia is not included), only 7 universities managed to enter the Top 200. among other statistics include:
  • 1 University in the Top 50 – UM
  • 5 Universities in the Top 100 – UM, UKM, USM, UPM and UTM
  • 7 Universities in the Top 200 – UM, UKM, USM, UPM, UTM, IIUM and UNIMAS
This is not a particularly good performance of the universities in the nation. Only those in the top 100 put up a creditable performance. Even the top is only at No.39 with a score 73.70, which is not too great considering the Top 10 in Asia all had scores above 94.30. The Top 10 Universities in Asia are presented below:
  1. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Hong Kong) – 100.00
  2. University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) – 99.80
  3. National University of Singapore (Singapore) – 99.30

  5. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) – 97.20
  6. Seoul National University (South Korea) – 96.90
  7. Kyoto University (Japan) – 96.30
  8. Osaka University (Japan) – 96.09
  9. Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) – 94.30
  10. Tohoku University (Japan) – 94.30
The overall best in asia should be given to Japan with the high number of universities in the Top 200 with 56 universities in the Top 200. Hong Kong deserves a special mention for having the greatest number of super elite universities with 3 in the Top 5, with universities ranked No.1, 2 and 5.
